A Part of The Humid Subtropical Region.
In 1881, the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad Company expanded its line from Greenville to McKinney, passing through land owned by the brothers. The name Wilson’s Switch was commonly used to designate the region. When residents applied for a post office branch, they learned that Wilson’s name was already in use. The community then introduced the name Princeton in honor of Prince Dowlin, the landowner and promoter of the town. This name was accepted, and a post office was established in 1888.Princeton was incorporated in May 1912. John C.
Wilson was the first post-incorporation mayor. Princeton was on the Sabine River near the Deweyville site, 30 miles northeast of Beaumont in southeastern Newton County. The town grounds were located in Princeton Bluff (or Possum Bluff) in 1839. Princeton has become a ferry and boat landing for travelers on the Sabine River. From 1880 to 1881, the post office temporarily served the town. However, Princeton did not grow in size, and the town was abandoned due to the emergence of Deweyville at the turn of the century.
