A Vibrant Ranked One of Safest Texas Cities
Carrollton is located on Interstate 35 East, 14 miles north of downtown Dallas in the Dallas, Denton, and Collin counties. The site was included in a Peter’s Colony grant. The first settlers in the area were William and Mary Lerner, who arrived in 1842. A.W. The Perry family continued two years later, claiming their headship in the Trinity Mills region. Perry partnered with Wade H. Witt to set up a factory there. Over time, he acquired vast lands.
This probably included the site of Carrollton. Many early settlers were associated with blood and marriage. The northeastern settlements that extend to Denton County have British
colonies, and many of the landowners, including the families of Jackson, Furnaud, Morgan, and Rowe, were immigrants from England. The settlements are likely named after Carrollton,
Illinois, the hometown of many of the early settlers.
