The Town with a Lake Attitude
Little Elm is located on Farm Road 720 and an arm of Lewisville Lake, twelve miles southeast of Denton in far east central Denton County. It was founded by Kit King in 1844 on the banks of Little Elm Creek. The county’s first post office was in King’s House in 1852. King’s Crossing was then used by the stagecoach from Preston Bend to Bird’s Fort. The first shop in Little Elm opened in 1859. In 1866, Henry Hill built a store a mile east of the current location, and the post office moved to the new location, changing its name to Hill town.
In 1900, Little Elm had 194 residents, and by the 1930s it had 120 residents and six businesses. In the 1950s it had 200 residents and five businesses. Thereafter, the community’s population and businesses grew due to road development in the county, which made it more accessible to both Denton and Dallas, and its location near Lewisville Lake.
