Keller is located on US Route 377 fifteen miles north of Fort Worth in northeast Tarrant County. Double Springs, located two miles north and east of the current site of the settlement, was settled in the early 1850s, although pioneers came to the area earlier. They named their settlement Athol. In 1848, Samuel Needam transferred 640 acres of land to Isaac Roberts for $200. This land contained both the Double Springs settlement and the location of future Keller. In 1875, Roberts left part of his land on A.G. Roberts. A.G. Roberts sold his right of way to Texas and Pacific in 1882 for $25.

July 1881, H. W. Wood provided 40 acres of land to the public for the site of the town known as Athol. Citizens want Athol to have a station and a permanent stop, and if the foreman of Texas Pacific, or an official, named Keller prompts the place to become a line stop, the town will be named after him. The name Athol was removed and by 1882 the site was collectively called Keller. Traditionally, the train first passed Keller on May 9, 1881, before the date of 1882, when Roberts sold his right of way to the Texas Pacific Ocean.
